A traditional machiya, reborn as a turnkey luxury residence.
LOUCA acquired this 1960s machiya off-market in the heart of Higashiyama, steps from the historic temple district. The property retained its timber skeleton but had suffered decades of superficial alterations that obscured its original character.
Our architecture team stripped the interior back to its structural bones, then rebuilt around a restored tsuboniwa courtyard that brings diffused natural light into the deepest rooms. Sliding shoji screens redefine the flow between living, dining, and garden spaces.
The kitchen was fully reimagined in solid hinoki wood with integrated appliances, while radiant floor heating and a discreet smart-home layer bring the home to a modern turnkey standard without compromising its heritage soul.
